Monday morning we had a guided tour of the Edinburgh Castle and drove down the Royal Mile to the Holyrood Palace. The Edinburgh Castle is built on a volcanic plug. (There are several in the Edinburgh area. They are the remains of an extinct volcano.) The Castle covers an area of 10 acres. There are several buildings in the Castle, most of which are museums. One of them houses the Scottish crown and jewels along with the Stone of Scone. Kings of Scotland were crowned while sitting on the Stone of Scone. It was taken by Edward I of England but returned to Scotland by Queen Elizabeth II.
The oldest church in Scotland is in the castle. A picture of the interior of the church is shown below.

Below is the exterior of the building that was built within the Edinburgh Castle after World War I to honor the men who were lost during that war. After World War II, the dead of WW2 were honored in it as well. Pictures inside the building were not allowed.
