Day 4, Part 2: Tuesday, November 6, 2001

Ceiling inside part of the British Museum

The above photos were taken at the British Museum. We took a double-decker bus to get there. Something different. The glass ceiling is in the area near the cafeteria and library. The sky was still relatively clear. Before we left the museum, it was completely overcast and windy. It rained for the next two days and became very cold. When I say "rain," I mean drizzled. And when I say "very cold," I mean that it was around freezing with a wind chill below freezing.

Amphora    Helmet    Assyrian, Babylonian, or Persian stele (?)

The British Museum is renowned for its collection of artifacts from around the world. Some of it was acquired by British archaeologists from countries which were not yet exercising any control over their antiquities. Some countries want their stuff back. It is a difficult decision. So often there is news of looting of important archaeological sites.

The display of artifacts from the Pantheon from Athens's Acropolis was very impressive and informative. The Pantheon was destroyed when munitions -- which the Turkish army stored in the building -- blew up. The stupidity of it all is staggering.
