Day 5, Part 1: Wednesday, November 7, 2001
The above picture is of St. Margaret's Church. It is next to Westminster Abbey and is much smaller than the abbey. It is the church where Winston Churchill got married. It is also where many of the people close to Princess Diana attended her funeral. The main ceremony was in the Abbey next door, but more important people filled the area of the Abbey where the ceremony took place. So St. Margaret's was used as an overflow. As always, many people are buried in the floor of the church.
Westminster Abbey was closed until the early afternoon, so we took a side trip to Trafalgar Square. The first thing we noticed was the number of pigeons. There were so many that you almost couldn't see the pavement. Brenda had the idea of standing among pigeons with something over her head to imply that she was being bombarded with droppings. We couldn't get the pigeons to gather around her feet -- short of throwing them some food. We were afraid that if we had thrown food, Brenda would have been crushed in the stampede. The courage involved in getting this shot was close to running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain.
We shopped at Waterstone Bookshop, which is listed in some tourist brochures we have. It was very big. I bought a desk calendar and some small Harry Potter books.
We made it back to Westminster Abbey after the service was over. I was able to get these shots of the Abbey before and after we went through it. Unfortunately, photography was not allowed inside the Abbey. I bought some postcards which I scanned and placed on the last London 2001 page. Click the following link to go there.
