Crater Lake, OR: Lake wall and reflection. Mount Mazama erupted around 7700 years ago. The power of the eruption was more than 10 times greater than that of Mount St. Helens. (It is estimated that the eruption of Mt. Mazama expelled more material than any one eruption in the last 10,000 years.) Another series of eruptions began the creation of a new cone and sealed off the crater floor. Water gradually filled the crater and formed the lake. Note the 'Matterhorn'-like peak on the horizon. Crater Lake, OR: The road around Crater Lake is about 33 miles long. Much of it is close to the rim. Tour books say that some of the road is only one-way. This is not true. It is a two-way road all the way around the crater. (18N6a) |
