The technology for the trolleys in San Francisco was first developed by Andrew Smith Hallidie in 1873. The same basic technology is used today. Someone at one of the trolley stops told me that several years ago they had to rebuild everything under the street, replacing the cable and everything. We were very happy that they were available to us.
